Germany captain Patrick Femerling has decided to call it quits with the national team after the Olympics.

The decision means the 33-year-old center, who made his debut with the senior team in 1996, will not play at next year's EuroBasket in Poland.

"I have been in the national team for more than 12 years and have many great memories," Femerling said.

"The Olympic participation now is the absolute peak and for me the perfect time to quit.

"With Chris Kaman, Jan Jagla and Tim Ohlbrecht at my position, strong enough players are available."

Femerling, who added that he also wants to spend more time with his family during the summer, has made 204 appearances for Germany and won 118 games.

He celebrated a bronze-medal triumph at the 2002 FIBA World Championship and a silver-medal win at EuroBasket 2005 in Belgrade.

Germany will play against Angola, Spain, Greece, the United States and China in Group B at the Olympics.

By finishing in the top seven of last year's EuroBasket in Spain, Germany do not have to go through qualifying for the 2009 event.
