GAME REPORT
16 September 2007

Slovenia drained seven three-pointers during a 24-6 run to start the fourth quarter in knocking off France 88-74 to clinch seventh place at the 2007 EuroBasket as well as a berth in next summer's pre-Olympic tournament.

Jaka Lakovic hit three long bombs in the big stretch on his way to 26 points, six rebounds and seven assists.

Tony Parker (France)
Tony Parker's 31 wasn't enough to put France into the additional Olympic qualifying tournament.
Uros Slokar struck twice from long distance and converted a three-pointer in the spurt as part of his 13-point showing and Radoslav Nesterovic added 19 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

“This is just unbelievable,” said Lakovic. "We played so well in this tournament and were just one step away from the semi-finals. At least we have met our aim before the EuroBasket of reaching the pre-Olympic tournament.”

Slovenia were able to overcome two heart-breaking losses to Greece and Germany in the past two days in clinching seventh place, one spot worse than in 2005.

France star Tony Parker scored a game-high 31 points and did all he could to keep the French in the game late, scoring his team's first 10 points of the fourth period.

France, who also got 13 points from Ronny Turiaf and 10 points from Joseph Gomis, crashed to eighth place - their worst EuroBasket showing since taking 10th place in 1997.

"The blame goes to the whole group. Today we were motivated and we reacted well. But it was very difficult when Slovenia were hitting so well from outside in the fourth quarter," said French captain Boris Diaw, who fouled out with zero points and four rebounds.

"Our aim coming into this tournament was to reach the Olympics or the pre-Olymipc tournament, but we have failed in both aims."

France started the game cold, just 1-of-6 from the floor in falling behind 14-6.

Claude Bergeaud's team rolled off an 11-0 run to pull ahead but trailed 18-17 after the first period.

The game went back-and-forth in the second quarter and was even at 33-33 before Yakhouba Diawara's three-pointer keyed a 7-0 France spurt, during which Lakovic drew his third foul.

Matjaz Smodis was able to hit a three-pointer in the waning seconds of the first half to trim the deficit to 40-36 at the break.

After Slovenia had pulled to within 40-39, Joseph Gomis and Parker combined for France's final 14 points of the third period in jumping to a 57-51 advantage going into the fourth.

Ales Pipan's team went on fire to start the final period.

Slokar drained two long bombs and converted a three-point play and Lakovic hit three treys of his own in a 24-6 run which opened a 75-63 lead with 3:40 to play.

Slovenia would eventually work the lead up to 17 points in the fourth.

QUOTES
16 September 2007

France

Coach Claude Bergeaud: "I'm very proud of my players . The Slovenian team won the game. We were in the game for three quarters, and in the last one they shot with an unbelievable accuracy, especially from long range."

"Our physical shape wasn't at its best. This tournament was a great disappointment for us. We had an ambition before the tournament, and we knew it could turn one way or the other."

"We came very close to beating Russia (in the quarter-finals), but after we lost, we lost something. It was a good game with a good balance, but in the whole tournament our game was irregular."

"We are always talking about the future in France. But in competitions like this, you never see teams win with young players. Our team is young. The leaders are only 25 years old, and when we play against teams with veteran leaders, we have no players. So I hope for national team that this team will stay for a long time, with new talents joining the team."

Guard Joseph Gomis: "We played bad, especially in the last quarter. We gave good intensity during the whole game. At some point they scored a lot of points in the last quarter, and we couldn't respond."

Slovenia

Coach Ales Pipan: "We're happy now. It wasn't easy after the two last losses, but thanks to my players they showed a great performance today."

"We played the game, and had some problems in the first half, especially on defense. But we fixed that in the second half. We were very good in rebounds in the last quarter. My players were great tonight and I'm proud of them. At this moment I don't know who'll be the coach of the team, because my contract has expired now. We'll see what's going on in the next few months. But for Slovenian basketball it's very important to reach the Olympic games. It was a very tough tournament for us, because I had only eight or nine in the rotation. We were together in good and bad moments, and for us to be in the top eight teams in Europe it's a big success."

Center Radoslav Nesterovic: "A great effort from all the players after two disappointing losses. I hope the whole team will be back next year in the pre-Olympic games, and I hope we're going to make it then. This was a very important thing for Slovenian basketball. It feels good to be among the top eight teams in Europe, coming from a small country with only two million people. (Jaka) Lakovic was amazing tonight and in the entire tournament. He proved that he's a great player that will give it all for the team."

GAME PREVIEW
16 September 2007
In most international competitions, the game for seventh place means very little other than the two quarter-finalists wanting to end their tournament on a high note after two straight losses.

But the game for seventh at the 2007 EuroBasket promises to be an extremely contested affair as Slovenia take on France with a spot in the pre-Olympic tournament up for grabs.

Last Time Out: France lost to Croatia 86-69 in the 5th-8th classification round while Slovenia fell to Germany 69-65. Slovenia beat France 67-66 earlier in the tournament when Tony Parker missed a foul shot with 0.1 seconds left which would have sent the game to over-time.

Key Match-Up: Parker vs Jaka Lakovic - both point guards have struggled at crunch time in this tournament - though Lakovic hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer against Italy. But their respective teams will be looking towards them for leadership with the Olympics still a possibility for the winners. The winner of this showdown could decide the game.

X-Factor: Matjaz Smodis. The Slovenian power forward could have a monster game if the French haven't figured out their problems in the post. Croatian big men Marko Banic, Stanko Barac and Nikola Prkacin combined for 38 points on 18-of-23 (78%) shooting in their win against France. Look for France to get a healthy does of post moves from Smodis and Radoslav Nesterovic.

Stats: In the last two games, Slovenia have blown leads of 12 in the final 2:30 to Greece and nine in the final five minutes against Germany.

Sounding Off: Slovenia play-maker Lakovic: "I'm sure that our team will stay together until and try to save our possibility to make the Olympics. It will be difficult especially because our team is young. We cannot think about Greece or Germany - even though it's difficult to do that sometimes. We must win."
