Finland and Great Britain booked their spots in Division A with convincing wins on Saturday.

After a big win at home earlier in the week Great Britain visited Geneva and came away with an 89-78 victory which secured a 163-119 aggregate win.

Romania left themselves with a seven point cushion in their EuroBasket Division B tie with Finland, scoring an 83-76 win in the first of two games between the teams to decide who will ascend to Division A.

The Romanians grabbed the early lead and slowly built on it.

In the last two months, the Chicago Bulls star has led Great Britain to four straight wins, allowing the Brits to force their way into a two-game play-off for promotion into Europe's Division A of basketball nations.

Great Britain sealed their place in Europe's divisional play-offs with an 83-51 win against Belarus in Minsk.

It was a tough game which both teams - the best units in the group - needed to win if they were to advance towards next year's EuroBasket 2009 qualifying matches.

Georgia’s attempts to win promotion to EuroBasket Division A received a significant blow on Wednesday when Iceland beat them right before the death with a three-pointer in a 76-75 upset.

Trying to keep pace with Group C leaders Finland, who are unbeaten at 6-0, Georgia led 74-72 but allowed Jakob Sigurdarson to nail a three-pointer with just two seconds remaining.

Slovakia coach Peter Valo praised his team's fighting spirit after they came from behind to post an 80-75 victory over the Netherlands in Group B of EuroBasket 2007 qualifying Division B.

Radoslav Rancik scored a game-high 31 points while Anton Gavel added 19 for the hosts, who trailed 60-55 at the end of the third quarter before turning things around in the final 10 minutes.

Georgia saw off a determined Austrian side on Saturday night in Tbilisi to keep pace with red hot Finland in Group C.

The Georgians were led by Zaza Pachulia who totaled 25 points and five rebounds in the victory.

Ireland opened their European campaign with a 86 – 58 defeat to Switzerland in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght on Saturday.
 
Switzerland with Thabo Sefolosha in their ranks started the first quarter brightly with the Chicago Bulls star proving a particular thorn in Ireland’s side.
