PLAYER PROFILE

Career: Slavia Prague (Czech Republic-D2, 1997-98), Sparta Prague (Czech Republic-NBL, 1998-2000), Real Madrid (Spain-EBA, 2000-01), Pepinster Wegnez (Belgium-D1, 2001-02), Le Mans (France-Pro A, 2002-03), St. Quentin (France-Pro A, 2003-04), Chalons (France-Pro A, 2004-05), Strasbourg (France-Pro A, 2005-06), Zaragoza (Spain-LEB, 2006-07)

All his life Ondrej Starosta has been bigger than his peers, reaching 216 cm before he was done growing.  Despite clearly having the physical characteristics of a basketball player, Starosta began his athletic career as a handball player and it is not until he was 16 that he found basketball. In 2000, he jumped from Sparta Prague to the bright lights of Real Madrid and after a season with the youth team, he moved to Belgium and then to France. At Strasbourg he got his first chance to play in a cup competition, averaging 5.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game as his team competed in the Euroleague, but the big man was frustrated with his role on the team and his personal performance as well. He attended the NBA Summer League in 2005 in Salt Lake City, playing for the San Antonio Spurs and averaging 6.0 points in 16 minutes per game. Last year, he tried out for the Cavaliers but the Cleveland franchise waived him during the summer camp. After returning from the US last fall, he agreed to terms with Zaragoza (Spain-LEB) in late November.
