PLAYER PROFILE

Career: Olimpija Ljubljana II (Slovenia-Division 1B, 1999-2002), Michigan State (USA-NCAA Div. 1, 2002-03), Fortitudo Bologna (Italy-Lega, 2003-06), Unicaja Malaga (Spain-ACB, 2006-07), Benetton Treviso (Italy-Lega, 2007), Virtus Roma (Italy-Lega, 2007). Selected in the second round of the 2005 NBA Draft (#46), by the Indiana Pacers

Slovenia desperately missed Lorbek at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan while he recovered from a foot injury. He proved to be very useful at EuroBasket 2005 in Belgrade, both on offense and defense. His abilities were not a big surprise, though, to anyone who had followed his career. Two years ago he was branded the top EuroLeague young player and the Indiana Pacers drafted him with the 46th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft. Lorbek decided to stay in Europe for couple of more years. The Ljubljana native is the prototype of the modern big man. He can shoot the ball from anywhere, has nice hands, is an excellent passer and has a high basketball IQ. On the downside, he’s not a great defender and tends to be a bit soft. After excelling at the youth level, Lorbek surprised everyone by opting to go to America and play in the NCAA. However, Michigan State's game didn’t fit with his style, and he shocked the college world by returning to sign a professional contract with Bologna. His numbers have been down a bit for the past two seasons and Lorbek needs more playing time and composure to live up to his talent. That might happen in Roma where the son of famous Slovenian player, Ratko Lorbek, averaged 14.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game in 12 Lega games.
