Early Run Helps Latvia Ease Past Estonia
03.09.2006

A dominant first quarter set the course for Latvia’s 87-57 win over Estonia in Group D action.

Leading 9-6 early in the first quarter, Latvia scored 13 unanswered points to take a double digit lead and they never looked back from there.

Kristaps Janicenoks, who led Latvia in scoring with 15 points, hit two three-pointers during the run.

Latvia led 30-13 after one quarter and their stingy defense held Estonia to 10 points in the second quarter as they went into halftime leading 48-23.

The Latvians never trailed by less than 20 the entire second half and shot just a shade below 50 percent from the field for the game.

Kristaps Valters and Raitis Grafs each tallied 13 for the winners.

Tarmo Kikerpill was the one bright spot for Estonia. The 196-cm forward scored almost half of his team’s points with 22.

Latvia evened their mark to 1-1 and will play at Denmark this Wednesday, while Estonia dropped to 1-1 and will next play at Croatia, also on Wednesday.
