Bosnia-Herzegovina Eye Final Round Spot
19.10.2006

Bosnia-Herzegovina coach Nenad Markovic is confident his side can secure the final remaining spot at EuroBasket 2007 - as long as they have all their players available for the additional qualifying tournament.

The national side was paired alongside Hungary and Bulgaria in Thursday´s draw in Madrid for the final qualifying competition in which 10 sides will compete against each other for the last available space in the finals.

Bosnia-Herzegovina have consistently made it to EuroBaskets since the break-up of the Yugoslavia and they will be among the favourites to reach Spain.

"Hungary and Bulgaria are good teams, but I think that we have the better team in my opinion," Markovic said.

Bosnia and Herzegovina finished third in Group B of the EuroBasket 2007 qualifying round.
The coach admits his side´s success will depend on who shows up to play.

"It is very early to tell which team we will put out in qualifying," he added.

"It will be interesting to see which players come. That is the main question, especially for us, because we had a problem this summer with the players.

"If our full team is there, then I am not afraid of any of the 10 teams (in qualifying)."

Missing this summer in qualifying from the side that played at EuroBasket 2005 were Elvir Ovcina, Sinisa Kovacevic, Vedran Princ, Edin Bavcic, Samir Leric and Aleksandar Radojevic.

If the Bosnians reach the finals, they will face a daunting task with Greece, Serbia and Russia awaiting them in Group A.

Greece are the defending European champions and this summer´s FIBA World Championship silver-medalists, while Serbia and Russia are historically two of the continent´s biggest powers.

"If we get through it is a very tough draw for our team, but I think the important thing is to participate in the EuroBasket and be competitive," Markovic said.

"I want my team to first of all make it through this first stage, and then if we go through to the EuroBasket, then I know it will be tough for sure, but we are not going to give up easily."
