Toronto Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo confirmed on Thursday that the club will not grant forward Jorge Garbajosa permission to compete in EuroBasket.
Garbajosa, who broke his fibula and tore an ankle ligament when he fell awkwardly during a game on March 26, was hoping to be a part of the Spanish squad for the tournament that starts in September.
Garbajosa recently was evaluated in Toronto and was put through a number of tests by the team's medical staff.
Despite performing on-court drills without pain, Garbajosa still has medical concerns.
A detailed review and assessment of the various images and scans taken have revealed insufficient healing of the fractured fibula.
And due to their inability to acquire adequate insurance coverage, the Raptors denied Garbajosa permission.
"Despite Jorge feeling and looking ready to play, the medical findings suggest otherwise," Colangelo said.
"We have consulted with a number of foot and ankle specialists and have concluded that there is an elevated risk for Jorge to compete at this time.
"We know this decision is disappointing for Jorge and the Spanish Basketball Federation, but we feel strongly that this is in the best interest of Jorge Garbajosa to continue a long term and productive basketball career."
Garbajosa was a key player for Spain in their World Championship win in Japan last year.
